Do you want to make tons of money this summer? Money to help your family pay rent, buy your own food, jewelry, whatever? Well, CHAH is currently letting students apply for a job in the Summer Youth Employment Program.
If you’re a student that wants to make a quick buck this summer, you should most definitely apply for the SYEP. Yes, you’ll obviously need to do some kind of work, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. Applications are closing February 28th, so if you have questions, contact program director Lance Gonzalez ([email protected]) or SYEP operational assistant [email protected]. Also, you need to be at least 14 years old!
You can either get the application from the main office, or do it online at https://application.nycsyep.com/. If you’re doing it physically, fill out parts you can fill out, then show it to Ms. Chimilio in room 501 at her office. If you’re doing it online, don’t use your DOE/mychah emails. Use a personal email.
Here’s a Q&A between me and Lance Gonzalez, program director for SYEP.
AM: How much overall income will students make working at the school?
LG: I believe our younger youth which is 14-15 make $700 over the course of the six weeks in the summer. As for the older youth it’s all dependent on how many hours they attend, but it probably averages around $2,200 assuming you attend all of the hours throughout the entire summer.
AM: What kind of work will students do?
LG: So we have a bunch of worksites, we have worksites in healthcare, in STEM, we also have a bunch of sites that offer administrative and office duties which are pretty basic. We also have two childcare worksites, a real estate worksite, and a skincare worksite where they do social media marketing. Those are just a few off the top of my head.
AM: What are the working days and times?
LG: It’s all dependent on the worksites as worksites function semi-autonomously so once we place you at that worksite, you’re quote on quote at the mercy of the worksite as you’re now one of their employees, so if they say you need to come in 5 days a week for 5 hours, that’s your schedule. However, they do allow supervisors and participants to be lenient, so if you have any extracurriculars, we allow students and supervisors to work together to create a schedule.
