Ms. Beckles hosted tryouts for the step team in February. Many students went out for the team, and those chosen so far were based on how well they performed.
All the candidates practiced and then had to perform alone and in a group. Ms. Beckles said all of them had been working really hard and all wanted a spot on the team
The CHAH Phoenix asked the coach what she would like to change in the step team and some things she would like for the team to have. She said she would like some boys to try out and make the team. Step dance is not exclusively for girls, she said, adding she would like to have funding from the school so they could get uniforms.
The last thing she said was that she wished she could arrange a halftime show when the team performed at home basketball games.
The tryouts have been a success so far, with the process halfway done. Ms. Beckles still has some kids to assess.
She will have a full team once the second assessment is held on March 16.
