The phone ban affects the students’ usage of their personal devices, prohibiting them from using it at school. It’s in place because students get distracted on their phones instead of paying attention to their studies. You have to come to school, put it in a bag with a zipper, give it to the staff in the front desk, and you’ll get it back at the end of the day during advisory. What do the students and staff think about it? In this report we interviewed a seventh grader and two staff members.
Seventh grader Kathy Hueyopan said “I think it’s good, because why do you need your phone? You’re doing your school work.”
The 6th grade math teacher Ms. A says, “I really like the phone ban. Kids socialize, take care of their learning, [and] they’re not influenced by things out there. I read a book called ‘Anxious Generation’ with most teachers and we discovered how the phone plays a factor on kids, therefore I agree.”
Ms. Damas, a paraprofessional who is also one of the people who takes your phone at the door and checks your ID when you go outdoors to play, says “I think it’s very good, perfect, 100%. I’m very positive because their learning and were going to get very smart students. [The state banned phones] because the students weren’t learning and were on games.”

Personally, I think that the phone ban is suboptimal and could easily be avoided by the student just saying that they left it at home.

Love the story. And love the phone ban. It is long overdue. CHAH has been at the leading edge of banning phones, and I have been on a crusade to teach students about the hidden agenda companies have to get teenagers to constantly be on their phones.

The school could just implement a rule where if a teacher sees you on your phone in class, they can take your phone for the day or for the duration of the class. Not all students would be on their phones in class all the time, unlike what many people believe. I am aware that social media is, in fact, bad for students’ mental health. However, texting a friend for ten seconds in between classes shouldn’t be treated as such a crime.

I truly believe in the phone ban at school. Students need to interact and learn how to socialize let alone learn in school. Bravo to the State for implementing it
